    • Noninvasive Assessment of Regional Ventricular Function, Regional Pulmonary Function, and Hemodynamics from MR, Ultrasound, and X-ray CT
  • Abstract
    • In this talk, an overview of our activities in several areas of biomedical imaging as relates to imaging of flow and motion will be given

      I. MRI has the unique ability to create tag saturation patterns in the myocardium through application of non-selective RF pulses prior to conventional imaging. We have been developing a set of techniques to determine 3-D regional myocardial strains from 4-D tagged MRI data. First part of the talk will be devoted to this topic.

      II. The phase of the MR signal is motion sensitive - spins in the presence of an external magnetic field gradient will accumulate a phase offset from which velocity of moving tissues and blood can be determined. However, the data is noise and artifact prone. In the second part of the talk, we will describe a unique in-vitro flow testbed which we have developed over the last few years which allows for validation of MR-based flow and velocity measurements and outline computational approaches to non-invasive determination hemodynamics and intravascular pressures from MRI which have also been tested on in-vitro flows.

      III. In the area of 4D CT, we have developed methods for assessment of regional function of the lung and have proposed new deformable registration methods based on 3D optical flow for volumetric analysis of regional lung strains. The third part of the talk will overview results from these efforts.

      IV. Ultrasound echocardiography continues to be a very versatile and effective approach to determination of cardiac function. We have developed novel speckle tracking methods for assessment of regional function through combination of tissue Doppler and speckle tracking for more accurate tracking of myocardial tissue. An overview of results in this area will also be provided.
  • Biography
    • Dr. Amini has been elected an IEEE Fellow, effective January 1, 2007 with the following citation: "for contributions to cardiovascular imaging and medical image analysis". The fellow grade is the highest level of membership conferred only by invitation of the Board of Directors upon a person of outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and experience in IEEE designated fields, and who has made important individual contributions to one or more of these fields. With more than 365,000 members in over 150 countries, IEEE is the world's largest professional society dedicated to the advancement of technology. Only 0.1 percent of the active membership worldwide can be elevated to the rank of fellow in any given year.

      Dr. Amini received his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1983 with honors where at 18 he was the youngest member of his graduating class. He received an MSE in Electrical Engineering (systems) in 1984 and his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1990. After Postdoctoral work in Biomedical Imaging at Yale University he was on Yale faculty for 4 years. He then joined Washington University to establish his own laboratory where he stayed for 10 years. He joined the University of Louisville Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in 2006 as Endowed Chair in Bioimaging and full professor with support from the Kentucky Research Challenge Trust.

      Dr. Amini has participated on the scientific program committee of numerous conferences and workshops in the area of medical imaging and image analysis as part of IEEE EMBS (Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society), SPIE (Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers) , International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), and Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI). He served as the general chair of SPIE Medical Imaging Conference on Physiology, Function, and Structure from Medical Images between 2002-2006 and was the general co-chair of the SPIE Medical Imaging Symposium in February of 2007. He is also on the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and computerized medical imaging and graphics.

      Dr. Amini's research interests are focused on medical imaging and biomedical image processing and analysis. Areas of interest include cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary imaging and image analysis: 1) Development of new MR imaging techniques for quantification of the heart motion and its application to determination of mechanical strain. 2) Development of Ultrasound methods (such as speckle tracking) for determination of regional cardiac function from echocardiography. 3) Development of motion-sensitives MRI techniques for imaging flow velocities, determination of intravascular pressures, shear stress, and other mechanical indices of vascular function. 4) In the area of pulmonary imaging, his interests are in determination of regional lung function and respiratory mechanics from 4D-CT and MRI with application to radiation treatment planning. 5) Additional areas of interest are in development of mathematical and numerical image analysis techniques for determination of anatomical volumes, shapes, deformable image registration, and motion estimation.

      • Image-Based Risk Analysis for Liver Surgery: Intervention Planning and Transfer into the Operating Room
    • Abstract
      • Today, planning of complex liver surgery can be supported by image analysis, virtual resections, remnant volume computations, and risk analysis. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the methods developed at Fraunhofer MEVIS and introduce the image processing steps applied for extended tumor resections and the risk analysis for living donor liver transplantations. The evaluation of selected algorithms and the planning of clinical example cases will be presented. The transfer of planning data into the operating room is challenging and topic of ongoing research. Recent experience with navigations systems and mobile devices will be presented and discussed.
  • Biography
    • Dr. Andrea Schenk is Head of Liver Research at Fraunhofer MEVIS (Bremen, Germany), a leading research Institute for medical image computing. In this role she develops and coordinates projects with clinical and industrial partners worldwide. Dr. Schenk studied Mathematics and Computer Science in Dublin and Dortmund and graduated at the Technical University Dortmund in 1998. She received a Ph.D. in medical engineering with summa cum laude from the University of Bremen for her work on Liver Segmentation and its Application to Hepatic Interventions. From 1998 - 2000, she worked as a scientist at CeVis, the Center for Complex Dynamic Systems and Visualization in Bremen. In 2000, Dr. Schenk joined the research institute MeVis (now Fraunhofer MEVIS) where she works in interdisciplinary teams and leads projects with engineers, natural scientists, surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists. Her research interests include image processing on all scales with different image modalities, morphological and functional liver analysis, and the transfer of research results into clinical applications and routine. Dr. Schenk is author of more than 70 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences and co-authored five book chapters.
